The current popularity of essential oils is exciting, also a wee bit scary. I don’t mean to squash the cleverly marketed hopes and dreams of network marketing circles. It’s not for me. I don’t want to sell anything; I just want to give the best bodywork session I can. EOs are amazing things. I use them daily. Here’s a simple list to ponder when purchasing:

  • “Therapeutic Grade” or “Certified Grade Oils” are marketing phrases, nothing more. You will get a high quality oil, but they are available from other vetted sources, especially in Nashville.
  • Contraindications – should you be using this oil? Please education yourself on what could be beneficial, and double check the contraindications. Beware of allergies to oils! Are you pregnant? Click that contraindication link.
  • Are you taking the advice of someone on Facebook or should you be talking to a doctor or licensed professional? My eyebrow is raised at over-medication, but if you have a practitioner you trust please ask them. You may need a blood test to figure out some random deficiency. Some sellers really know their stuff. Others do not. Read, read, read.
  • Support your local folk! I buy most of my oils from Marge at Nature’s Gift – she has been in this game longer than most and has been a HUGE source of education and knowledge for me.

Like I said, I use these things all the time. Once you find your jam – have you smelled a pure rose geranium? To die for. Peppermint, lavender, and lemon drops in a shot of water? Allergies be gone! Eucalyptus is a sinus cleaner-outer. Lemon and Peppermint in a diffuser? Have mercy. Delicious. These oils may not work for everyone because we are all blessedly different in beautiful bodies with different genetics – carefully try stuff until you find what works for you!

I use Thieves & Progessence Plus from Young Living like a boss. The majority of my single oils come from Natures Gift. I’m actually right in the middle of a sniff test of Frankincense samples from Nature’s Gift. (see above!) I have a kit from DoTerra. Try them all and find what’s important to you. Date around before you marry a brand, you know? These oils are good, wonderful things and can be used for a bazillion things – use them with respect, purpose, and joy. And you’ll smell REALLY good.

Did you know you could bring your own oil to your session with me? I always have ylang ylang, lemon, and peppermint on hand, but if you want your aroma of choice, bring it! Book here – and remember 1st timers get $25 off their first hour with me at Cognito Hair Design.
